Four young people who had been identified by youth workers as being able to benefit from a funded job-ready course participated in the first ‘Positivitoy’s Food Handling’ course at Stawell Neighbourhood House.
This accredited course is a stepping stone for people to gain employment locally in hospitality, and sales of Positivitoys and other donations fully funded the places in the course for the four selected participants.
Maurice Billi, co-ordinator of the school focused youth service at Grampians Community Health, said he had received positive feedback from the four students who attended the workshop on August 11.
“The kids were still excited on Monday about how well it went. I wanted to congratulate you on all your hard work to make this happen and to support some of our young people who wouldn’t have otherwise have had such a wonderful opportunity,” Mr Billi said.
A benefit of the course was that it was also open to anyone to attend.
People in the hospitality industry and others aspiring to gain work within the field were able to be there, share the learning experience and expose the young people to broader thinking on what opportunities might be available to them from the course.
Although not funded by Positivitoys, Hayley Little and two friends also completed the course and believed that it has helped them with being able to participate in the community and workplace.
“I had the vision of helping other young people when I found out how much the course cost and knew there would be a lot of people who could get a job if only they could afford the course,” Hayley said.
“Now I’ve also completed the course it would be great one day to be helping out at a community event or working somewhere and have one of the Positivitoy students there alongside me.”
