The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for much of the state.
The bureau has predicted northerly winds averaging between 60km/h to 70km/h as a cold front moves into Victoria’s south-west.
It has forecast peak gusts between 90km/h and 100km/h to develop from the west.
Mt William in the Grampians recorded wind speeds of 111km/h at 2am on Friday, while in Horsham wind speeds have been steadily increasing since that time. The strongest recorded gusts in the city so far measured 48km/h at 5.30am.
Similar gusts have been recorded in Stawell.
The bureau said these gusts would likely become widespread during the morning and persist in the afternoon.
The State Emergency Service advises people to:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
- Keep clear of fallen power lines.
Temperatures are forecast to reach between 17 and 20 degrees across the Wimmera on Friday. If these temperatures eventuate, it would be the warmest winter day in the region this year.
