The couple are originally from England and were engaged when they moved to Australia in 1956. Two years later the pair became husband and wife at the Holy Trinity Church of England in Coburg on July 12, 1958.
Mr and Mrs Ayer moved to Ararat in December 1968, opened a business and called Ararat their home ever since.
Mr Ayer said the reason behind their long and happy marriage was because they were so compatible. He said they had always got along with each and they do everything together.
“We are compatible and rarely have an argument or disagreement,” he said. “Now that we have reached 60 years, I’m looking for another 10.”
Mrs Ayer said her family was the biggest highlight of her marriage. They had two children – Julie and Scott – ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The couple celebrated the milestone with family and friends at the Chalambar Bistro today.
