The students found a deaf and hostile tabby living under on of their classrooms and after failed attempts to rehome ‘HeyHey’ off-campus, he now enjoys official school cat status.
Year 10 student BB said HeyHey was too shy to come out at first.
“We slowly got him used to all of us students, and when we could catch him we started raising money for the vet to get him desexed and all his shots,” she said.
Canteen manager Jodie Simpson said she had tried to settle ‘HeyHey’ at her house but he escaped three times to return to the school.
Ms Simpson said students and the canteen collected donations to pay the vet and VCAL built a personalised cat kennel.
“A lot of kids who are not allowed to keep animals, so its nice that they get to have a pet at school and learn to deal with his disabilities as a special needs cat,” she said.
