The Stawell man has been charged with burglary, theft and police assault.
Police went to a house on Napier Street, Stawell shortly before 6am on Saturday as part of an investigation into a burglary on Friday night.
When police attempted to speak to the alleged suspect, he threatened self-harm and refused to leave the address.
Police tried to negotiate with the man, with at least five Critical Incident Response Team police officers attending the scene on Saturday morning.
He was arrested at approximately 12.30pm and was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.
He was remanded in custody and will appear at Ballarat Magistrates' Court on 12 June.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
