The Hawks led by just 13 points at half-time, with undisciplined acts proving costly.

“We hurt ourselves in the first half,” Tatyoon coach Simon Brearley said.

“We gave away about four 50 metre penalties which they scored from so at half-time we put a focus on controlling what we can control and trying to let go of any frustration.”

Brearley’s message to his side came across, as the Hawks went on to boot 12 second half goals.

Brearley said the third term was the best he has seen from his side this season.

“Even though we kicked eight goals it was more so the way we went about our game,” he said. “We have put a lot of work into our defensive game which paid off. We kicked a few goals goals from turnovers.”

A yellow card in the third term hurt Great Western who were right in the match at the main break.

Aidan Marr missed the majority of the third quarter after being sent from the field for “something verbal”.

“Having that player down allowed them to have a loose player around the ground,” Great Western coach Will Bell said. “They were able to outnumber us at all stoppages and the game was pretty much done once they got on that run.

“It teaches our players to keep their mouths shut.

“It is frustrating being in the game at half time and not having a real chance to keep at it.” Despite slipping away in the second term, Bell said he was pleased with the efforts of his players.

“Coming off a 100-point belting and taking it up to them for three quarters wasn’t bad at all,” he said.

“In the past we would have let our heads drop but we fought hard and showed how much we have improved.”

Steve Lorenzo stood up for the Lions, booting four goals in the indigenous round match.

“Stevie was really exciting. He had a blinder of a first half,” Bell said.

“He led the boys out and flipped the coin which was a special moment for him obviously hailing from the Tiwi Islands.”

Great Western ruckman Rayne Salmon was the only major injury concern from the game, sustaining an achilles injury.
