The authority’s acting regional director for Western Victoria Mal Kersting said wet roads, black ice and – in some areas – snow meant people needed to take extra care on the region’s roads.
“Whether that’s taking an extra moment to ensure that your car is properly equipped to handle winter conditions, or slowing down to allow for inclement weather, our wish is that every person travelling on our roads gets home safely this winter,” he said.
Mr Kersting said people also needed to be mindful of driving during a frost, and be aware of strong winds and visibility issues when driving in fog or rain.
“Areas of Western Victoria are particularly prone to icy conditions late at night or early in the morning,” he said.
“We ask drivers to ensure that they’re fully aware of the dangers associated with black ice.
“Black ice can cause issues for even the most experienced drivers, so we’re reminding drivers to slow down, leave additional space between their vehicle and those travelling ahead of them, and to use their headlights whenever they think it’s necessary.
“Even if it means delaying your trip to avoid potential dangers, it’s far better to arrive late and stay safe as opposed to the alternative.”
Mr Kersting said black ice detection systems were in place along some stretches of the Western Highway.
However he said the authority encouraged motorists to report hazardous road conditions by calling 13 11 70 or by visiting the VicRoads VicTraffic website at traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au.
He said people could also sign up to the VicTraffic app for live information about road closures and traffic alerts.
