The 19-year-old was playing his second game back for the Blues’ state league affiliate the Northern Blues when he landed awkwardly in the opening term of the clash at Ikon Park on Saturday.
Carlton issued a statement on its club website saying the club will not rush him back given the injury.
“After a couple of games back in the VFL, unfortunately Tom landed a bit awkwardly in the VFL game this week,” it said.
“As a result, his back spasmed. We got it scanned on Sunday which has revealed a bit of a hotspot in his back so we’re going to be really conservative in his treatment and recovery.
“Unfortunately, he’s likely to be out for the remainder of the season but we’ll monitor that as time goes on.”
It comes as Williamson looked to return to the senior team after missing out on the opening 10 games of the season following an injury during the AFLX preseason competition.
