Jarrod Fry rode the aptly named Hazard Ahead to victory in the 2000m 2018 Willaura Cup amidst wintery conditions in Ararat on Saturday.

The Craig Blackshaw trained five-year-old gelding jumped from barrier seven and held off Wannon Warrior and Nimbostratus to claim the win by about a length in front of a reduced crowd due to weather.

Fry’s efforts to hold Wannon Warrior at bay pocketed the owners an impressive $11,000 prize money.

Constant rain throughout the day dampened the track with conditions making the track soft under foot as it was consistently downgraded during the day to finish as a heavy 10 following the final race.

The feature race was reduced to 10 horses after three scratchings reduced the field.

The Willaura Cup day meet was the final event of the season in Ararat with the track now taking a break from hosting racing over winter.

Ararat Turf Club manager Adam Atchison said the racing was not hindered by the rain.

“Everyone who had prebooked had a great day,” he said. The next event will be the Ararat Gold Cup.
