The Stawell and Ararat Cross Country club’s champion of One Tree Hill, Simon Gallagher, did it again on the weekend, claiming yet another victory in the annual race.
Not only did Simon record the fastest time, he became the King of the Hill once more after handicaps were applied in the Steve Baird- sponsored race.
The sun shone, the trees were still and the mountain loomed (ok so it is only a hill), as the 13 of us settled on the start line listening for the starter’s ‘go’.
Twelve club runners and one invitation waited, hearts pumping in anticipation of the competition ahead.
It might be only three kilometres but hill running has a momentum all of its own.
Hill running teases you into believing you can do it and then, just when you think you are going ok, you round the corner and up it stretches once more.
Simon, on the other hand, makes friends with the hills and like a lion tamer, he has no fear.
He lopes along on his long legs and makes it look easy. Simon is an absolute natural at this type of run. This is one of Simon’s favourite races, having won it many times before. The King of the Hill race is Simon’s third win for this season.
Second was Peter Gibson who has been knocking on the door in several races this year but has not yet managed to break through for a win.
Following behind Peter, but no threat to his position was new runner to the club, Emma McCready.
Emma has already won two races, in this, her first season.
Keep enjoying your running Emma, as you have a great future.
Next Sunday, September 17, the club heads to Three Jacks Reserve, Stawell, for the Hall Memorial five kilometres.
Invitation runners are welcome and racing starts at 9.45am.
