The side has been the benchmark in the reserves competition all season, but Burras coach Brent Hudson said his side could not be complacent.

“It hasn’t been easy against Stawell all year,” he said.

“We may be favourites, but we’re not expecting anything to be easy.”

Fourteen players from last year’s grand final loss to the Saints are likely to take to the field as the Burras chase the perfect way to end a season.

“It’s really good to get the chance to redeem ourselves in the following season,” Hudson said.

With both the senior and reserves sides playing in grand finals on Saturday, there was a possibility the side might have had to cover for injuries in the top side.

“At this stage we are looking like we’ll have the full squad to pick from,” Hudson said.

“There was a couple of players creating interest with fitness tests, but from what I’ve been told they’re good to go.”

The Burras will head into the game relying on a simple game plan.

“We pride ourselves on winning the ball and keeping hold of it,” Hudson said.

“We need everyone contributing if we are going to win.

“Stawell can move the ball quickly once they get a chance to release, so we’ll also keep an eye out on that.”

Stawell coach Marc Brilliant expected the game to go the distance.

“It will be a great game,” he said.

“All the games this season against the Burras have been within a goal so I’d be expecting another close match.”

In order to get the win, Stawell will need to make better use of its opportunities than it did when the sides met in the second semi-final.

“If we can put some scoreboard pressure on, it might put the pressure back on them,” Brilliant said.

“They have great players in there team, so it will be interesting to see who lines up where in seniors or reserves as they are both playing on the day. They are the favourites and have been the best team all year.

“A lot of hard work has gone into reaching the grand final. It’s about representing the club the best we can on the day. If everyone gives 100 per cent and we play the full four quarters we will have a great chance of winning.” 

Working in Stawell’s favour is the premiership experience some of its younger players bring to the team.

“We’ve got eight under-17 players from last year playing on Saturday,” Brilliant said.

“Their pace and energy will play a big part in the game.”

Hudson also said he thought he had an ace up his sleeve.

“Our head trainer Peter Burn has returned from a 10-day trip to NSW,” he said.

“He’s been travelling around the Riverina sourcing premium oranges for our quarter-time breaks.”
