Ararat City Band director and Marian College music co-ordinator, Katrina Bird said this was the first time the two bands had performed together.
Ms Bird said the event was a success.
"The band performed really well and the students were fantastic," she said.
Ms Bird said a highlight of the evening was the special guest, tuba player Susan Bradley.
A lung cancer survivor, the professional musician is an inspiration.
"She was fantastic," Ms Bird said.
"The audience loved her. To have someone like herself come to play in Ararat was just great."
Ms Bradley performed a solo piece, a piece with the band and a duet with Ms Bird.
Ms Bird said the music was aimed to suit a wide range of ages and interests and that the instrumentalists were joined by the Marian College choir.
"There were also dance acts and a couple of drama performances," she said.
"There was a real mix. Everyone enjoyed themselves."
Ms Bird said it was great experience for the school band to perform with the Ararat City Band.
"We'll definitely look at doing it again next year," she said.
