Green Hill Lake Development Board members were concerned that visitors to the lake from overseas who may have English language difficulties may be unaware of Total Fire Ban days through other media such as radio and television and believed Total Fire Ban flags may help solve the problem.
"Fairy grass was everywhere this year and we thought fires were a real issue," chairperson Gwenda Allgood said.
With the flagpole installed recently and the fire danger period abating, Mrs Allgood said the board was provided with an Anzac Day flag by Ararat Rural City Council and it was proudly displayed prior to the weekend.
Mrs Allgood said other flags would also be used to promote special events, including the Golden Gateway Festival, Ararat Show, Jailhouse Rock Festival as well as emergency messages.
"It will get the message across to visitors," she said.
"It will just be an extra way in which to promote what's on in town and get them in there."
