Stawell RSL celebrates 10 years of Open Mic Nights
STAWELL RSL is tuning up for another night of local talent and community spirit as it marks a decade of hosting its popular Open Mic nights.
The next event will take place on Thursday, June 26, continuing a tradition that began ten years ago to raise funds and offer residents a relaxed night of live entertainment.
Originally launched with just a gold coin entry fee, the event has steadily grown in popularity.
These days, it draws a regular crowd of around 40 people, with numbers peaking at 80 on some nights.
RSL Vice President Russell Smith said the initiative has developed into a much- loved fixture in the Stawell social calendar.
“It has now grown to the point where we have many regulars attend and come to listen and play,” Mr Smith said.
“If people love to perform, they can do so with no pressure. And if they just want to sit back and enjoy some live music, it’s perfect for that too.”
The night caters to a wide range of performers, from seasoned musicians to first- timers.
For those without their own instruments, the RSL provides guitars, amplifiers, drums, keyboards, microphones, and a full PA system.
Russell himself is also happy to jump in and play guitar if needed.
“People are welcome to bring their own gear, but we have everything they need if they don’t,” he said.
“We usually give performers the chance to play three or four songs, but above all, there’s no pressure.”
It’s also not just music that is performed on the night. Past events have featured poetry readings and other forms of performance, adding to the night’s relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
“It’s a great social night to have some fun and listen to live music,” Mr Smith said.
Entry is $5, with tea and coffee provided and drinks available at bar prices. The night starts at 7pm and concludes around 10:30pm and is held on the last Thursday of every month.
Anyone interested in performing or want more information can contact Russell Smith on 0427 408 311.
All are welcome.
