The school’s Head of Chinese studies Ling Zhao said the funding came from the school’s Chinese New Year celebrations.

“Funds raised through our Chinese New Year celebration traditions, including the staff banquet and dumpling stall, initiated by Ms Ling, Head of Chinese, along with her dedicated Chinese team and language students, have supported the purchase of this essential frontline safety device,” Ms Zhao said.

The equipment was introduced to the Stawell Secondary College community last Thursday by CFA members Joseph Stubberfield and Jai Smith.

They explained how the device helps firefighters detect dangerous gases and determine whether an environment is safe to enter.

According to the school, the detector can identify hazardous gases such as carbon monoxide, monitor oxygen levels and detect flammable or toxic atmospheres, providing real-time readings and audible alerts.

Ms Zhao said students were proud their fundraising had helped provide equipment supporting local emergency services.

“We are incredibly proud that our students’ fundraising efforts have contributed to something so practical and potentially life-saving,” she said.
