Reading and remembering in Moyston

A heartfelt gesture in Moyston is turning grief into generosity, as local resident Derek Odgers honours his late partner’s legacy through a new community library box, the Valda MacDonald Community Library. Situated along his fence on School Street, just across from Moyston Primary School, the small library invites residents to borrow or donate books freely.

“I wanted to give back to the local community because they’ve been so good to us since we moved here from Melbourne six years ago,” Derek said.

His late partner, Val MacDonald, dedicating more than 30 years to childcare and volunteering at Moyston Primary School.

“She loved helping kids,” Derek said.

“I wanted to make it a living memorial for her.”

Val passed away in September after long-term health issues, leaving behind a lasting impression on those who knew her.

Derek said the idea of a library felt like a natural way to continue her mission of helping others.

“Val had a big thing about helping people, so I figured a library will sort of help in her absence, that will continue her mission,” he said.

“It was also a way for me to have a positive outlet for channelling grief. Building it was a sort of catharsis for myself.”

The library currently includes a mix of children’s and adult books, though Derek hopes to expand it as the community gets involved.

“Initially I thought I just want children’s books in there, but we have a few adult ones as well, mix it up, and I might even expand it. It depends on how many people are going to use it.”

He encourages locals to stop by, borrow a book, and donate any children’s titles they can spare.

In time, Derek plans to give the library a small makeover and install a visitors’ book.

“It’s a free library for all of the Moyston community,” he said.

“If the library disappears briefly, don’t worry, it will return.”

Through the Valda MacDonald Community Library, Derek has created not only a space for stories, but also a touching tribute that keeps Val’s spirit of kindness alive in the heart of Moyston.
