Quilters stitch community spirit into cancer fundraiser

THE Stawell Quilters are once again throwing their support behind cancer research, inviting the community to come together later this month for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. The event, to be held on Thursday, May 21, from 10am to 3pm in the Diamond Room at Grampians Community Health in Patrick Street, will raise money for the Cancer Council while also showcasing the work and community spirit of the local quilting group.

Stawell Quilters president Janet Enright said the annual fundraiser had become something the group genuinely looked forward to each year.

“We do really enjoy it,” she said.

“We’ve had a few members, or members in their families, that have been touched by cancer, so it’s quite personal to us as well.

“It’s something special and something we love doing — getting lots of people in and having a bit of a chat with everybody.”

Alongside tea, coffee and homemade treats, visitors will be able to browse a display of quilts created by members, while some quilters will be working on projects throughout the day.

Ms Enright said the event was not only about fundraising, but also about giving people a glimpse into the work of the quilting group.

“People can have a look at what we do,” she said.

The Stawell Quilters are also well known for their charitable efforts beyond the morning tea itself, regularly donating handmade quilts to people facing hardship, illness or loss.

“When the Pomonal fires were on, we handed out over 40 quilts to people that had lost homes and things,” Ms Enright said.

“Someone with health issues or things like that — we donate quilts.”

After drawing a large crowd to last year’s event, Ms Enright said she hoped locals would once again rally behind the cause.

“I think it’s what stands us apart, really,” she said of the generosity often shown in country communities.

“Just come along and enjoy the day and enjoy what we have to offer — our food, our company and our quilts.”

Entry to the Biggest Morning Tea is by gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to cancer research and support services.
