Pyrenees farewells Luigi Bazzani
THE Pyrenees has lost one of the figures who helped turn Moonambel from a quiet country township into a name recognised by wine lovers far beyond the region. Luigi Bazzani — remembered as a visionary host, accomplished chef and tireless advocate for regional food and wine — died on Wednesday, February 25, aged 86, at Ballarat’s St John of God Hospital, with his family by his side.

For many in the Pyrenees, the Bazzani name is inseparable from Warrenmang Vineyard, where Luigi and his wife, Athalie, helped build not just a winery but a destination — a place that encouraged visitors to slow down, taste properly and discover the region.
In the late 1970s, the couple established Warrenmang Vineyard at Moonambel, helping lay the foundations for what would become one of the Pyrenees’ best-known wine destinations.
Over the decades that followed, Warrenmang drew travellers off the highway and into the vineyards, contributing to the growing reputation of the region as a serious wine and food destination.
Mr Bazzani’s influence extended well beyond one property. He was widely credited with helping redefine regional dining in Victoria and was celebrated for bringing high-quality food and wine experiences to communities outside Melbourne.
Those who worked with him, or were welcomed as guests, often spoke of his warmth and high standards in the same breath — generous, demanding in the best sense, and deeply proud of the craft.
Born in Italy in 1939, Bazzani built his early career in hospitality in Europe before eventually settling in Australia in 1969 with Athalie, where the pair went on to establish a series of successful hospitality ventures.
His contribution to the industry was formally recognised in 2014 when he received the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the hospitality industry and to tourism.
He leaves behind family, friends, and a region shaped in no small way by his belief that country Victoria could be world-class.
Pyrenees Shire CEO Jim Nolan said Mr Bazzani was a true visionary.
“He played a pivotal role in shaping the Pyrenees into a region synonymous with outstanding wines, fine dining, and excellent hospitality.
“Luigi created world-class wines at Warrenmang that truly put our Shire on the map and paved the way for all the other Pyrenees winemakers to showcase their viticulture skills on the world stage.
“My sympathies are extended to his wife Athalie and children Andreas and Alysia. He will be sadly missed,” Mr Nolan said.
