Pull on the pink for Sunday’s Mother’s Day Classic
Stawell residents are being encouraged to pull on something pink and lace up their running shoes this Sunday as the local Mother’s Day Classic returns, with organisers hoping for a strong late wave of registrations ahead of the annual fundraiser.
The Stawell event, to be held on May 10 at North Park, will raise money for breast and ovarian cancer research as part of the nationwide Mother’s Day Classic movement.
Local organiser Jess Maffescioni said the event was designed for everyone — from seasoned runners to families simply wanting to spend Mother’s Day morning supporting an important cause.
“The Mother’s Day Classic is on this Sunday and it is raising money for breast and ovarian cancer,” she said.
“There is a 4km run or walk, or a 7km run for people feeling like a bit more of a challenge.”
A 400-metre limited mobility walk will also be held, helping make the event accessible to participants of all ages and abilities.
Event registration will begin from 8am on Sunday, followed by a warm-up at 8.45am and the run and walk events from 9am.
Ms Maffescioni said online registrations would remain open until Saturday night, while people would also be able to sign up on the day using cash or EFTPOS.
She said organisers were eager to see a strong community turnout.
The event will also feature a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses, as well as a coffee van serving coffee and hot chocolate throughout the morning.
Participants are being encouraged to embrace the spirit of the event by dressing in pink, with prizes to be awarded for the best-dressed people — and pets.
Ms Maffescioni said the current volunteer group had now organised four Mother’s Day Classic events following a break during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nationally, the Mother’s Day Classic has become one of Australia’s best-known community fundraising events, bringing thousands of people together each year to honour those affected by breast and ovarian cancer while raising money for life-saving research.
In 2024, the event raised $3.3 million, including $2.1 million for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and $1.2 million for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.
The Stawell Mother’s Day Classic gives local residents the opportunity to contribute to that effort while taking part in a relaxed and family-friendly community morning.
Registrations can be made at mothersdayclassic.com.au.
