Plans underway to celebrate rail milestone
AVOCA Arts and Gardens committee is gearing up for a celebration later this year to mark the 150th anniversary of rail to Avoca. The first 24 kilometres of the line connecting Avoca to Maryborough was complete in October 1876 when over 3,000 people attended the opening of the new Avoca Railway Station.

Probably the last passenger train to run to Avoca was in 1989 with a special trip by a steam train, much to the delight of rail enthusiasts. As this photo shows, the old station building had fallen into a state of disrepair at that time. Photo courtesy Noel Bamford.
