OPINION - GAYLE TIERNEY MP

As we move into spring and look to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, I wanted to update readers on several important initiatives that are making a real difference in our communities. One issue I regularly hear about from is the condition of our roads. That is why I welcome the Carroll Labor Government's significant investment in road maintenance, including a pothole repair blitz that will see around 250,000 potholes repaired across Victoria.

Backed by a $352 million boost to the road maintenance budget, this work will help improve road safety, reduce damage to vehicles and ensure our regional road network remains reliable for the communities, businesses and freight operators that depend on it every day.

With another fire season approaching, it is also reassuring to see continued investment in the emergency services that help keep our communities safe. The Victorian Government has committed $100 million towards new CFA tankers across the state, ensuring our fire crews have access to modern, reliable vehicles.

The completion of the new CFA stations at Beaufort and Ararat also marked an important milestone. These facilities provide our dedicated firefighters with the resources they need to train, respond and operate effectively during emergency situations. Our CFA members do an extraordinary job protecting lives and property, and they deserve the best possible support.

Education and training also remain central to building strong regional communities. One of my proudest achievements has been delivering Free TAFE. This important initiative is now legislated, ensuring future generations of Victorians can continue to access life-changing training opportunities.

Free TAFE has removed financial barriers for thousands of students, allowing people to gain qualifications, retrain, reskill and pursue new careers without the burden of tuition fees. Across our region, students have undertaken courses in areas from nursing and early childhood education through to agriculture, horticulture, construction and the trades. For many, Free TAFE has been the difference between putting career aspirations on hold and taking the next step towards a rewarding future.

The benefits extend far beyond individual students. Local employers gain access to a better-skilled workforce, industries can address workforce shortages, and regional communities are better positioned to grow and prosper.

As many readers would now be aware, this will be my final column before I retire from Parliament. It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve the people of Western Victoria and to advocate for our communities over many years. I thank you for your support, your generosity and your commitment to making our region such a wonderful place to live. It has truly been an honour to represent you, and I wish every community across the Pyrenees, Ararat and Northern Grampians all the very best for the future.
