Maroona Pub to reopen in December

THE renovation of the Maroona Hotel is nearing completion with doors expected to open in December. The hotel was purchased earlier this year by a consortium of 88 local residents who wanted to ensure the hotel remained in the community as an operating business.

There were fears that without a community buyout, the hotel would go the same way as other country hotels like Willaura, Wickliffe and Buangor and close forever.

The Maroona Hotel closed its doors in July to undergo extensive cosmetic renovations including a new bar, a new kitchen, plastering, new carpets and refreshed toilets.

Maroona Community Hotel committee member Bruce McDougall said work was proceeding to plan.

“It’s going pretty well. We don’t have an opening date yet but it will be early December I’d say.

“A lot of cosmetic work has taken place, there’s a new bar and a new kitchen in the same spots and the rest is all cosmetic,” he said.

Mr McDougall said people will be surprised by the changes.

“There will be a bit of a wow factor, it looks pretty flash,” he said.

In a vote of confidence in the new venture, Jodie Sutherland and Mick McKerron who operate the highly regarded catering business Jody and Co will take over as the hotel’s new licencees.

“We are very pleased to get them. They have a great reputation and will do us proud,” Mr McDougall said.
