Marnoo to host Hanson
AS the Ripon electorate heads towards a closely watched state election, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson is set to visit the Wimmera next month, with the Senator confirmed to attend a Farmers Fightback fundraising event in Marnoo.
The high-profile visit comes at a time when One Nation is enjoying a significant surge in support, with recent opinion polling suggesting the party has strengthened its position considerably over the past year. Some polls have placed One Nation within striking distance of the state's major political parties, fuelling speculation that the party could play a decisive role in shaping the election outcome.
Behind the scenes, members of the Labor, Liberal and National parties are understood to be closely monitoring One Nation's growing support, amid concerns the party could attract enough votes to influence results in a number of regional and rural electorates at the November election.
Senator Hanson, who has represented Queensland in the Federal Parliament since 2016 and remains one of Australia's most recognisable and polarising political figures, has built much of her support around issues including regional development, cost-of-living pressures, agriculture and opposition to what she describes as excessive government regulation.
Her visit to Marnoo has been organised by Farmers Fightback, an initiative of the Wallaloo-Gre Gre Alliance, a community group established to advocate on behalf of rural communities on issues affecting agriculture and regional Victoria.
Farmers Fightback announced this week that it had secured Senator Hanson as the guest speaker for a fundraising dinner to be held at Marnoo Hall on Saturday, August 29, beginning at 6pm.
Organisers say the event will provide local residents and supporters with an opportunity to hear directly from Senator Hanson on a range of issues affecting regional Australia, including farming, energy policy, water security and the future of rural communities.
The fundraiser is expected to draw attendees from across the Wimmera and surrounding districts, with interest likely to be heightened by the approaching state election and the increasing attention being paid to regional voting trends.
While supporters view Senator Hanson's appearance as an opportunity to discuss policies affecting country communities, critics have long challenged many of her political positions, ensuring her visit is likely to attract both interest and debate.
The Victorian election will be held in November, with regional seats likely to be closely contested as parties compete for support across rural and agricultural communities.
