Lawrence Street crossing works begin
THE Lawrence Street (Skipton Road) school crossing in Beaufort is set to receive a $100,000 upgrade.
The works will be carried out by Wayne Horne Earthmoving and managed by
Pyrenees Shire Council.
They include:
Kerb outstands to reduce pedestrian crossing distance
Renewing/upgrading signs and bollards
Removing water ponding issues through drainage and grating
Constructing a raised pedestrian wombat crossing on the service road
Footpath widening
The existing school crossing will be temporarily moved north of its current location and supervised as usual for Beaufort Primary School and Beaufort Secondary College students and parents.
Access to properties will not be affected but daytime speed restrictions of 40km/h will be in place.
The upgrade is funded by $80,000 from the Department of Transport and Planning’s 2024/25 School Crossing Infrastructure Fund and $20,000 from Council’s 2024/25 Capital Works Program.
“There is a high volume of students using the Skipton Road school crossing each day and we need to make sure they can do so safely and carefully,” said Shire CEO Jim Nolan.
“For this reason, we will move the current crossing - still manned by school crossing supervisors – to the north of its existing location to ensure students reach and leave school safely each day while the works take place.
“This upgrade will reduce the distance students and parents have to walk across the crossing, improve its signage and install a secondary crossing on the service road to make sure it is as safe as possible.”
