Kookaburras maintain perfect record
The Halls Gap Kookaburras remain unbeaten in the Horsham Cricket Association’s C-Grade competition following a 150-run thrashing of the Horsham Tigers at Halls Gap Recreation Reserve last Sunday.
After winning the toss and batting, Charlie McIntosh and Spencer Campbell put on an 83-run partnership. McIntosh had to retire on 51, after notching his half-century of 28 balls, in an innings that included seven fours and three sixes.
Bailey Stirling came to the crease and was dismissed for a duck, and 21 runs later, Spencer Campbell was bowled by Bailey Dridan for 25, and the Kookaburras were 2/104.
Adam McCormack and Caleb Bretherton put on a strong fourth-wicket stand, with Bretherton retiring on 51, which came off 38 balls.
McCormack was bowled by Ryan Steadman shortly after for 49, and the Kookaburras were 3/176.
Great batting from the lower order saw the Kookaburras amass an impressive 7/266 off 38.3 overs.
The Kookaburras' defence got off to a good start with Bretherton trapping Tigers captain Michael Fontana in front for LBW.
Regular wickets fell, and at one stage the Tigers were 4/51.
Isaac Hogan and Ryan Steadman provided resistance for the Tigers, but when Steadman was caught by Neill McIntosh off the bowling of Bailey Stirling for 8, the wickets tumbled, and the Kookaburras bowled the Tigers out for 116 in the 30th over.
Spencer Campbell was the pick of the Kookaburras bowlers, taking 3/16 (4), while Bailey Stirling was also accurate, taking 2/15 (4.4).
Kookaburras’ president Neill McIntosh praised Bailey Stirling.
“Bailey is going to be a good cricketer, and he was unlucky on the weekend with the bat, but his fielding is outstanding,” he said.
“He could have followed his mates and played for Stawell/Great Western, but he stuck around, and this grade is going to suit his cricket.”
McIntosh was also impressed with Nick Chard, who hit an unbeaten 16 in his first game of cricket.
“Nick plays soccer with Spencer Campbell, and he decided to give cricket a go, and he was brilliant in his first ever game,” McIntosh said.
As for the start to the season, McIntosh said it couldn’t have started any better.
“It’s been very good. We were not sure of how good the competition was before we started, but we have made a great start and couldn’t be happier,” he said.
“We are just getting enough numbers, and being able to play a full team is a great outcome.”
