Last week’s fundraiser brought together local residents, workers and shoppers for a homemade lunch while raising money to support equipment and patient care at Stawell Hospital.

Judith, who only joined the auxiliary a couple of months ago before becoming president, said the turnout had exceeded expectations.

“It is absolutely incredible,” she said.

“I’ve just joined the auxiliary a couple of months ago and I’m now president.

“The hospital auxiliary is a fabulous organisation, but the community is fabulous supporting us.

“We’re just overwhelmed how many people turned up, so it’s wonderful.”

Judith estimated well over 100 people attended the luncheon, with volunteers having to add extra tables to accommodate the crowd.

Funds raised through events such as the luncheon help the auxiliary purchase equipment that improves the comfort and care of patients at Stawell Hospital.

Judith said funds from the luncheon would support the auxiliary’s ongoing work, with the group hoping to contribute towards additional equipment for oncology services alongside funds already raised by Steve Gliese.

Judith said she had known the late Mr Gliese and his wife Glenda for many years and described his fundraising efforts through his garden as a tremendous gesture.

“His garden’s wonderful,” she said.

“It’s a tribute to him.”

For Judith, volunteering with the auxiliary is also personal.

She said her decision to join the auxiliary followed her husband’s lengthy stay at Stawell Hospital, where staff had shown great care and support.

“They were fabulous to him,” she said.

“They were so supportive.”

“I just thought, ‘Come on, Jude, you need to do something.’”

Judith said the auxiliary hoped to continue attracting new members, including younger people, to help carry its work into the future.

“We would like to have young people, because one day they’re going to be old and possibly might have health issues,” she said.

“Stawell Hospital is a fabulous place. I can’t recommend it more.”

The auxiliary’s next fundraiser will be a performance by the Accidental High Notes singing group on July 27.
