Green Hill Lake amenities vandalised

VOLUNTEERS at Green Hill Lake have been left disheartened following a recent act of vandalism at the popular destination which caused significant damage to the main shower and toilet block last Tuesday afternoon.

Volunteer Rob Keith said he was contacted by patrons after the incident occurred.

“I was out here (Tuesday) morning and the council workers were here and there was nothing, it was perfect,” Mr Keith said.

“Then I got a call from Morris (Allgood) at about 4pm. According to the neighbours both sides, a lot of noise was going on here and they thought it was us doing some repairs.”

The damage included one toilet, both male showers, a hand dryer and the coin operator for one of the showers being destroyed.

Committee member Morris Allgood said the incident had caused frustration among those who care for the site.

“We reckon we know who it is but we can’t say for sure,” he said.

President of the Green Hill Lake Development Board Gwenda Allgood said the vandalism was believed to be linked to a temporary water outage.

“It has nothing to do with the lake, from what we understand it was because the water was off,” she said.

“They must have done road works and they must have turned the water off and didn’t turn it back on and this is what we’ve suffered. Why did they do it? I don’t understand it.”

Mrs Allgood also raised concerns about the presence of long-term campers at the lake, claiming some have exceeded the 28-day per year permit limit without being moved on.

She’s called on council to enforce by-laws more strictly.

“We’ve got over 30 people living here, that’s not right,” she said.

Police this week began their investigation into the incident and are in the early stages.

Anyone with information should contact Ararat Police.
