Green fingers, green thumbs

FOR over two decades, Stawell’s Green Fingers Nursery has been more than just a place for plants.

It has become a valued part of the local community and a vital support program for clients of Pinnacle, offering purpose, routine, and growth, both botanical and personal.

Led by nursery manager Chris Sirre, the team of ten supported employees spends their days getting hands-on in the garden, developing skills and confidence in the process.

“You see people change. When they first come in they are a little bit shy, and then you see them getting more confident and grow. It’s really good to see them blossom, literally, pun intended,” Chris said.

From potting up native seedlings to assisting customers at the shopfront, team members are involved in every part of the nursery’s day-to-day operations.

“Some are helping customers as well,” said Chris.

The nursery has been involved in revegetation projects, including work for Stawell Gold Mine, with hopes to expand to more projects with local councils and environmental groups like Project Platypus.

“We do a lot of revegetation projects. Hopefully there will be others,” he said.

The nursery specialises in native plant propagation, with many grown from seed or cuttings.

“We propagate a lot from seeds, which is all Australian natives,” Chris said.

“We’ve also brought in stuff that they haven’t seen before.”

Chris has also used his contacts in Melbourne to bring up a fresh range of plants for local gardeners.

The range has expanded to include roses, bare-rooted trees and fruit trees, in addition to a wide selection of plants suited to local conditions.

Green Fingers also stocks garden products such as potting mixes, manure, pots and tools.

Green Fingers Nursery is open Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 3:30pm, at 13 Longfield Street, Stawell.
