Grapes it is!
THE community has spoken, with The Grapes of Avoca overwhelmingly chosen as the winning design for Avoca's new entrance sculpture. Created by local artist Robbie Allen, The Grapes of Avoca was inspired by the two industries that have shaped the region for generations: farming and wine.
The sculpture will be constructed using reclaimed plough discs donated by local farming families, transforming pieces of Avoca's agricultural history into a striking giant bunch of grapes.
The artwork celebrates both the renowned Pyrenees wine region and the people whose hard work and resilience helped build the community.
More than 300 community members cast their vote in the public poll, choosing between The Grapes of Avoca and Barrel Reimagined by artist Holly Adelaide.
Pyrenees Shire Mayor Cr Damian Ferrari said the result demonstrated the community's strong connection to the region's identity and heritage.
"The Grapes of Avoca is a powerful reflection of who we are as a community. It brings together our rich agricultural history and our internationally recognised wine industry in a creative and meaningful way," Cr Ferrari said.
"It's wonderful to see so many people take part in the voting process and help shape a landmark that will welcome visitors to Avoca for years to come.
"Using reclaimed farming equipment donated by local families adds an extra layer of significance to this project, ensuring the sculpture tells a story about our people, our history and our future."
The project is funded through the Victorian Government’s Tiny Towns Fund, and the sculpture is expected to be installed at the intersection of the Sunraysia Highway and Pyrenees Highway by the end of the year.
