Free skin checks will be available to Stawell residents later this month when the Skin Cancer Bus comes to town.

The Lions Skin Check and Awareness Unit will operate from Grampians Community Health in Patrick Street on Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19, offering local and surrounding residents free skin checks.

The visit is being coordinated by the Lions Club of Stawell as part of a wider initiative led by the Lions V Districts Cancer Foundation, which has rolled out the mobile service across Victoria and southern New South Wales.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and organisers say improving early detection remains a key priority, with the travelling unit designed to make checks more accessible while reinforcing awareness of skin health.

The air-conditioned van is equipped with three private checking rooms and disabled access, and will be staffed by trained and certificated volunteers working under professional supervision.

While the service does not provide diagnosis or treatment, visitors will be alerted to any suspicious spots or lesions and referred to their GP for further investigation if required — a critical first step in identifying potential issues early.

Alongside the checks, the unit will also provide practical information on sun safety and how to monitor skin changes, reinforcing the importance of regular self-checking.

The project has been made possible through support from Lions clubs, along with public and private contributors.

Bookings are required. Residents can contact Grampians Community Health on 5358 7400 to secure a place.
