City Band concert to support Red Shield Appeal
THE Ararat City Band will fill the Salvation Army Hall with music this Sunday as part of a special fundraising concert for the Red Shield Appeal. The afternoon concert will feature movie themes, rock, pop and gospel music, with afternoon tea provided for attendees. Entry is $10 per person, with the event beginning from 2pm.
Ararat Salvation Army’s Jacky Targett said the idea came from her husband, Linton, who believed the community would enjoy hearing the band perform more regularly.
“He said what about doing a band day because the community love the Ararat City Band, and it is underutilised but it’s also expanding on its experience,” Ms Targett said. “They want to do a whole lot of things.”
Ms Targett said the Salvation Army no longer had its own band, making the partnership a natural fit. “Why not, let’s have a band afternoon and use it as a fundraiser,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for the band to have another practice.”
She said Ararat continued to show strong support for arts and culture within the community. “Ararat’s got its live theatre and it’s got kids doing things, and the band’s doing things, there’s a lot going on. Ararat is very cultured,” she said.
Funds raised through the event will remain in the local district to support community programs and emergency relief. “It all stays here,” Ms Targett said.
Ms Targett said the afternoon would also offer an opportunity for people to gather socially. “They can have an afternoon of fellowship and chatting,” she said.
The concert program will include several traditional Salvation Army pieces alongside contemporary favourites.
“They’ve thrown in some classic Salvos stuff so it’ll test the old timers to see if they remember the words to the song,” Ms Targett said.
