Beers to flow again at Elmhurst

AFTER its closure six years ago, the Elmhurst Pub is preparing to welcome locals through its doors once again. Jodie and Dennis Low took over the business two years ago and, after navigating several hurdles, including having to postpone opening in August last year, the couple are now just weeks away from reopening the beloved local watering hole.

The pair, who moved to the area five years ago, are planning a soft launch in mid-September, with the pub set to offer locals a place to enjoy a drink, a meal and a chat once again.

Dennis said the pub would be welcoming locals to check out the renovated space.

“Anyone is welcome. We still have little things to finish off, but the main thing is we'll get the EFTPOS machine fired up, open the door and start the ball rolling.”

The planned reopening has already received plenty of positive feedback from the community.

The business has undergone a significant refresh all the way down to the beer lines, a new beer garden and a cafe space.

“We've put a beer garden in the back, and we put the cafe in, everyone's wrapped about that. I reckon that'd probably do better than the bar, with all the traffic we get during the day,” said Dennis.

The addition of the cafe is intended to broaden the pub's appeal, with pies, pasties and toasted sandwiches for weary travellers and hungry locals.

Jodie said the cafe would provide another option for the growing community.

“Since this was last opened, there are a lot of new younger families in town, but there is still an older generation, so a lot of the older ladies like to sit down and have a cup of tea.”

Accommodation at the pub is yet to be confirmed, although Dennis and Jodie said it remained part of their plans.

Jodie said getting the doors open would be the immediate priority.

“Get the pub and cafe up and running and then work out what we are going to do with the rooms.”

The accommodation was important to Dennis and Jodie to bring back to the pub, as it would provide a valuable service to workers travelling to the region.

“There are a lot of shearers that come up here and work, so to have the accommodation benefits them,” said Jodie.

The pair also hope to make the pub a hub for community activities.

“We will have fundraisers, meat raffles, Joker Poker and fundraising events for the CFA and the bush nursing centre,” said Jodie.

The Elmhurst pub will open from Wednesday to Sunday, with locals encouraged to follow the Advocate for details of the official grand opening date.
