Founder and President Rowena Murray said community enthusiasm has driven the shed to launch earlier than planned.

“Interest has been incredible. I was planning to launch in March this year, but it’s running away on me, so let’s go now,” Ms Murray said.

Memberships will open before the end of February, with affordable fees designed to keep participation accessible.

The first official course, a one‑day chainsaw safety and maintenance ticket with Treetec, will be held locally in Ararat.

Expressions of interest will open up on the new Ararat Women’s Shed website this week so dates and numbers can be confirmed.

An after‑hours sewing and knitting circle is also in planning as the shed’s first regular meet‑up.

The Ararat Women’s Shed aims to provide a space for hands‑on learning, creativity and community connection, from woodworking and workshop skills to sewing, printmaking and social gatherings.

The group is currently consulting with local women to shape its future programs through an online survey, available via the website.

While the shed is focused on supporting women, it welcomes all genders and is proudly affiliated with the Australian Women’s Shed Association and is a member of the Australian Men’s Shed Association.

The next step is finding a permanent home.

“We’re searching for a space that’s accessible, safe and practical, somewhere for tools, benches and a cuppa,” Ms Murray said.

“We’ve had some exciting conversations already and we’re also seeking local sponsorships and donations to help us get started.”

Several locals have already offered tool donations.
