In a sign the election is just around the corner, independent candidate Alex Dyson has opened a campaign office in Ararat highlighting the importance of our region to the result.
The orange coloured campaign hub in Barkly Street has been decked out by campaign volunteers and is open most days to answer questions from voters.
It’s the first time any political candidate has opened a campaign office in Ararat since the early 2000s.
Around 50 local volunteers attended last week’s opening.
Mr Dyson said he takes inspiration from the election of independent Cathy McGowan in the Victorian seat of Indi.
He said Voices of Wannon emerged because a group of local people recognised the need for change.
“They’ve seen what Cathy McGowan was able to achieve in another Victorian regional seat Indi, they’re seen her campaign for better mobile coverage, for better train services and they’ve seen her able to deliver it,” he said.
“This seat (Wannon) has gone the same way for 27 elections in a row. With the election coming up, we’ve got a decision to make. Are we going to stick to the same or are we going to elect an independent.”
“Independents vote for what is best for their electorate. They don’t vote as a block. I want to make every decision based on whether it is good for my electorate, good for my country and whether it’s good for my conscience,” he said.
Mr Dyson cited the condition of roads, lack of childcare, mental health and access to doctors as key issues for this campaign.
“This campaign is about getting a better deal for Wannon,” Mr Dyson said.
