A taste of elegance at Stawell’s historic station

LAST Sunday, February 22, the Stawell Railway Station Gallery held its monthly high tea, with ladies coming from as far as Horsham to catch up and share laughs and stories. The High Tea is held on the last Sunday of every month and proves popular.

It is well catered by members of the gallery, featuring finger food, cakes, scones and more.

The Stawell Railway Station Art Gallery doesn’t just cater for one-off events each month.

They can organise any sort of gathering, ranging from office events to birthdays, provided there is a minimum of 10 in the group.

The superb catering team of Linda Maher (President of the Railway Gallery), Shirley Burton and Jill Skelley work hard the day before and on the day to prepare the delicious food and mocktails, and you are greeted when you enter by the all-smiling Pauline Shirrefs.

One of the ladies from Horsham who showed up on the day was Marg Finn, whom Ms Shirrefs hadn’t seen for forty years.

They both went to Horsham High School in the 1950s, and were pleased to see each other again.

“The day was great and you just never know who will show up that you know, or haven’t seen for a while,” she said.

“It was amazing to see each other again as we were in the same class together.”

March's high tea is booked out for a birthday party, so the next bookings are now being taken for April.

In May, the Stawell Railway Station will celebrate its 150th anniversary.

The station was functioning in April, 150 years ago, but the official opening was in May, so the anniversary will be held on Sunday, May 24th.
