Rather than hosting a large public event, the family chose a more personal celebration, bringing together key supporters and long-time members to reflect on the winery’s rich history and achievements.

Guests were welcomed by the entire Thomson family, Viv and Christine Thomson and their children Yvette, Marcus, Ben and Hamish.

Wine Club Manager Nicole Thomson said the relaxed event reflected the family-focused approach that has become synonymous with Best’s Wines.

“We couldn’t get people out,” she said with a laugh.

“It was a great casual, laid-back afternoon to celebrate a milestone with us.”

Nicole likened the celebration to ‘a massively extended family dinner’, with guests enjoying a special tasting of the Thomson Family Reserve wines.

“It’s not something we bring out in the magnums very often at all and offer them for everyone, but 160 years, that’s what we do,” she said.

“There are not a lot of people who can celebrate 160 years.”

For fifth-generation winemaker Ben Thomson, the anniversary was a proud moment for the family and the business they continue to grow.

“I’m very proud of my family and I’m very proud of what we’ve actually achieved,” he said.

“I think the greatest thing for me in this industry is if people enjoy what we do.”
