In response to the COVID-19 pandemic the Gallery produced a pre-recorded floor talk with guest speakers, Nanette Carter and Robyn Oswald-Jacobs, on their new book 'Designer of Modern Textiles' to complement the Frances Burke exhibition.

Burke designs featured native flora, marine objects, indigenous artefacts and designs of pure abstraction.

Ararat mayor Cr Jo Armstrong has recommended residents attend the talk.

"This is a floor talk you won't want to miss," she said.

"The Gallery is so pleased to have co-authors Nanette Carter and Robyn Oswald-Jacobs share the story of Frances Burke with us in a 20-minute discussion.

"The authors are specialists in the field of textile design and bring a unique perspective to the conversation, highlighting Burke's influence on modern design and on Australian life during World War II.

"Frances Burke is remembered as a sharp businesswoman, design activist as well as an artist and now a subject of a new book 'Designer of Modern Textiles'.

"When many looked to overseas for fashion inspiration, Frances went on to become a ground breaking designer for Melbourne's Georges Department store."

Co-authors of a richly illustrated book published in August 2021, 'Frances Burke, Designer of Modern Textiles', Nanette Carter and Robyn Oswald-Jacobs deep-dive into Frances Burke's life in an intimate discussion with Gallery Coordinator, Katy Mitchell.
