The crash, which occurred on Thursday, July 5, blocked the Western Highway for hours as emergency services worked to free the man.
Investigators have been told a white Ford sedan was stationary on the dirt shoulder on the left-hand side of the highway, when it attempted a U-turn across the west-bound lanes of the highway.
In doing so, he drove into the path of a black Rangerover station wagon.
The Rangerover has crashed into the Ford, resulting in significant damage to the driver’s side doors.
The driver and sole occupant of the Rangerover, a 66-year-old man from Kingscote (South Australia) was uninjured.
The driver of the Ford, a 49-year-old Ararat man, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.
He died on Thursday.
