League chairman John Box announced Mick Jennings as the new board member for the season with David Wade stepping down from his position.
Jennings said it was a bit of a surprise to be contacted about the position but is happy to get involved and try to make a difference.
“John got in contact with me and I think I have a bit to offer, so I said yes,” he said.
“I think one of my qualities is I listen to what clubs have to say, so hopefully I can put those ideas forward and help implement some of them across the league to make it a better standard and keep everyone happy.”
Jennings has had nearly 30 years of involvement with the league, both as a player and coach at club and interleague level.
He said the league provided him with a lot of enjoyment and happy times and will use his new position to try and give back to the league the best he can.
“I have been part of the Mininera league on and off since 1990, been lucky enough to win some awards and coach a couple of premierships and have some great memories,” he said.
“I am honoured to be elected into the position I am in at the moment.
“I will be learning as I go and hopefully I can do the job justice.”
The league has some issues to work through with Jennings set to take a keen interest in the lack of junior participation across the league and try to come up with ways of improving the numbers playing.
“My personal view is we need to strengthen our junior program, that is one of the things I will be taking a big interest in,” Jennings said.
“But most of all, we just want to make sure every club has their voice heard and can speak openly about different issues within the league.”
Box said it was a great appointment for the football community and he was excited about working with Jennings and the rest of the board for the new season.
“Mick has plenty of experience in football through a lot of years,” he said.
“Has been with Wickliffe-Lake Bolac and Tatyoon previously and his son still plays football as well.”
It will be a new venture for Jennings, with the former player and coach set to work with all clubs in the new role.
Box said he is confident Jennings will fit in well and have an impact on the league during the upcoming season and beyond.
“This is his first time on a board, he has a passion for junior football and we need some young blood on our board, so I think he will work well,” he said.
The football season is set to start with round one matches scheduled for April 14, highlighted by a grand final rematch between Lismore-Derrinallum and Wickliffe-Lake Bolac.
