Emergency services were called to the scene on Tobin Street after grass and trees between a house and the perimeter fence and drainage channel of Oliver Gully Reservoir at 4:45pm.
Two CFA trucks attended the fire, which was also fought by some nearby residents with buckets.
A trunk of one of the gum trees in the strip of vegetation just metres from a house also caught fire, along with grass inside the channel.
The incident was declared safe just before 5pm.
Volunteers were still at the scene hosing down grass and trees as of that time.
The grassfire came on the eve of two Total Fire Ban days for Ararat and South West Victoria region with severe fire danger conditions and 40 degree weather forecast for Thursday and Friday.
