In a statement posted on social media, the band said the singer "died suddenly" in London on Monday, local-time.
"The lead singer with the Irish band The Cranberries, was in London for a short recording session," the Facebook post said.
The band did not say how O'Riordan died.
"Family members are devastated to hear the breaking news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time," the post said.
The Cranberries was formed in Ireland in 1990 and also included guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler.
They are best known for hits Linger, Zombie and Dreams and have sold more than 40 million records worldwide.
In 2003 the band split but reformed in 2009 to tour the US and Europe.
They toured Australia and New Zealand in 2012.
While touring last year a back illness suffered by O'Riordan forced the cancellation of shows across Europe and the United States.
O'Riordan also said last year she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and suffered from paranoia and sleep deprivation as a result.
