Chalambar’s Karen Brennan qualified for the event and was drawn to face Lake Bolac’s Joan Curnow in the first round to open her championship defence.
In the other matches, Carroll Arney represented Ararat against Joy Seeary from Stawell.
Ararat VRI’s Lorna Neil finished second in 2017 and will be hoping to go one better, as she opened up her account against Aradale’s Olive Gibson.
Stawell Golf’s Dawn Blackman had a bye to start the competition, due to an odd number of players involved.
The competition will be played over two days with the final to be played in Stawell on Tuesday.
The two-day championship event gets the bowls season back underway after a break during the Christmas period.
The midweek pennant season will resume next week with round 11 matches scheduled.
