Ararat Police Senior Constable Danielle Richardson found the pony grazing on the nature strip along Knott Road at about 8am.
“The pony was known to be a constant escapee,” Senior Constable Richardson said.
“It had been put on a diet and placed in a paddock that was fairly bare.
“There was no sign of forced entry on the gates, it just found a weak spot in the fence and escaped through a separate paddock with other horses.”
The pony was found about six metres from its paddock and was reunited with the owners within ten minutes.
“The pony is a frequent Houdini,” Senior Constable Richardson said.
“It’s not related to a previous incident were horses were deliberately let out of a paddock.
“The pony just saw some grass that it wasn’t allowed to have and went for it.”
Victoria Police posted the image of the hungry equine escapee on its social media accounts, receiving more than 1100 reactions on Facebook.
“Appears Victoria Police may be short of leads,” one user posted in response.
Ararat police have appealed for public assistance after a number of horses were let loose from a Port Fairy Road paddock last week in an unrelated incident.
