Central Grampians LLEN’s kicks off the Golden Gateway Festival each year with the interschool Push Cart Challenge at which the King of the Golden Gateway is crowned.
This year primary schools Ararat 800, St Mary’s, Maroona and Ararat West competed for the first place in an Endurance Race and a Sprint Race.
With teams of eight students, each team sent their pushers and drivers to race two 800 meter laps around the lake at Alexandra Gardens.
Students eagerly awaited for their team mates to reach the swap-over stations so they could run and drive their part of the track.
After several heats, the Endurance Race saw Ararat 800 Team 1, Ararat 800 Team 2, Ararat West Team 2, and Ararat West Team 3 run the grand final.
With an amazing effort, Ararat 800 Team 2 won the grand final in an amazing 8 minutes and 33 seconds.
Their counterparts Ararat Team 1, were only nine seconds behind them, finishing the race in 8 minutes 41 seconds.
Ararat West Team 2 came as second-runners up in 10 minutes 32 seconds, whilst Ararat West Team 3 finished as third runners-up in 11 minutes and 13 seconds.
To end with a bang, the students also competed in a 100 meter Sprint Challenge.
This involved students running a 100 meter track, turning their carts around with the help of CGLLEN’s student-volunteers from Ararat College, and running back again.
Ararat 800 and St Mary’s took to the finals in which Ararat 800 won by an eight second margin, with a finishing time of 1 minute 12 seconds, over St Mary’s 1 minute 20 seconds.
The day was complete with an annual picnic in the park at lunch time.
Wicked Wildlife came along to provide the students with some education about Australian wildlife, including snakes, lizards, crocodiles and more.
CGLLEN thanked all the schools, volunteers and students for participating and congratulated the winners.
