Josiah Mock, 16, Kyra Clarke, 14 and Katianna Grosser, 15, all received student citizenship awards at a ceremony on Monday.
The inaugural awards were presented on behalf of the Order of Australia Association. It is the first time the awards have been given out in Horsham Rural City.
Josiah is a Holy Trinity Lutheran School student who has held several leadership positions at the school.
He is involved in football, cricket and basketball and volunteers at youth groups.
Josiah said it was fantastic to be part of the inaugural group of student citizenship award winners.
“My plans for the future are to go to university and continue my interest in maths and science,” he said.
“I also love performing, playing piano and volunteering. Last year I went to the Philippines to help children over there and I hope to do that again in the future.”
Kyra is a St Brigid’s College student, who has been involved in Legacy public speaking, is a meals on wheels volunteer, a student representative council member and a junior ambassador for the Natimuk United Football Netball Club.
She is also the captain of her under-17s netball team and she helps with a children’s swimming program.
Kyra thanked St Brigid’s College for allowing her to be part of many school programs.
“Anything we can do to help out the community is great,” she said.
Katianna is a Horsham College student, who assists with youth groups.
She is a member of the student representative council and volunteers at Carols by Candlelight, the Uniting Church, Operation 19:14 and the Horsham College book fair.
Katianna said her teachers at school had given her many opportunities to further herself.
“I’m not sure what the future holds for me, but I hope it’s something good,” she said.
Order of Australia Association Horsham branch chairwoman and Yarriambiack Shire councillor Jean Wise said the students were very worthy of the awards.
“These students have a bright future ahead of them and I hope more young people follow in their footsteps,” she said. Cr Wise said the awards were designed to encourage students to think about their community.
She said the awards had been running throughout Australia for the past 20 years, but hadn’t been presented in the Wimmera until last year.
“Hindmarsh Shire started presenting the awards last year and Horsham and Yarriambiack municipalities will start hosting award ceremonies this year,” she said.
