The summer sun and sweltering heat means the swimming spots will be the popular spots but safety should be everyone’s priority across the summer months.
Water sports are popular but boats are dangerous in crowded areas and people should be mindful of the laws and restrictions places on marine vehicles when operating them, particularly in busy areas.
It is also incumbent on swimmers that they know their limits and do not take unnecessary risks.
Summer time is also a popular time for an ice cold alcoholic beverage which heightens the risk of injury.
The Royal Life Saving Society published statistics showing alcohol contributes to at least 20 per cent of all adult drowning deaths every year.
The same statistic rises to 41 per cent in the 15–29 years age group.
During the 2015-16 summer season, there was 70 non-fatal drowning incidents attended by paramedics in Victoria with 43 fatal drownings recorded.
As a society, we need to all work together to continue to decrease these stats and with Lake Fyans, Lake Lonsdale, Green Hill Lake and many of the other popular swimming spots currently without any lifesavers, it is up to each individual to ensure they are being responsible and abiding by the rules.
Swimming pools can be just as dangerous with it being a more popular option for families with young children.
Despite lifeguards working, the crowded pools make it hard at times to see someone who may be in danger.
If you are swimming and find yourself in a situation you are struggling with, remain calm and raise one arm as high as you can. This will allow other people to see you easier and someone will come to help you.
So as the warmer months approach and the swimming spots get busier, keep in mind that if you are swimming, then it is up to everyone to ensure everyone returns home at night to their family and don’t get into any nasty situations.
And if you see anyone else in trouble, either try and assist them directly or call for assistance from someone else to help the person in difficulty. Summer is a fun time and it is there to be enjoyed.
