The Step UP! for Down syndrome event in Horsham’s May Park on October 22 aims to raise awareness of people’s abilities and accomplishments.
Wimmera Down Syndrome Support Group runs the event every two years.
Group president Astrid O’Connor will complete the walk with her son Ethan, 6, who was diagnosed with Down syndrome as a baby.
She said the support group was a lifesaver for her.
“I was 22 when Ethan was diagnosed when he was 10 weeks old. It was a bit of a shock,” she said.
“Having people to share experiences with has been amazing. The people involved have been my best friends since.”
Ms O’Connor said event registrations would start at 9.30am. “We’ll have a warm-up event at 10.30am, and then we’ll walk around the racecourse,” she said.
“When we get back to May Park we’ll have some activities, games, a barbecue and a raffle.
“We’ve had overwhelming support so far with raffle donations.”
Ms O’Connor said people could visit the support group’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/WimmeraDownSyndrome/ or stepupfordownsyndrome.org.au for more information or to donate.
