The award finalists were announced by Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D'Ambrosio on Wednesday.
Ararat 800 Primary School is a finalist for ‘Student Action Team of the Year’ in the primary school division.
Teacher Leah Sharp said a group of 16 students had grown their own vegetables and raised chickens at the school to learn about sustainable food.
“They had a competition to see who could produce the least rubbish at lunch,” she said.
“We made videos and wrote about our project.
“We were all really excited to hear that we were finalists.”
Four students and one teacher will attend the ResourceSmart Schools Awards presentation ceremony in October next month.
The students said their favorite part of working the garden was “getting dirty”.
Ms D’Ambrosio said she congratulated all finalists.
“To be named a finalist or winner is a tribute to the hard work of the school communities across Victoria,” she said.
“I congratulate young Victorians for being passionate, innovative and helping to build communities that are more sustainable.”
