A parliamentary inquiry aims to provide answers about how petrol prices are set in country areas.

The inquiry will compare the prices of unleaded, diesel and LPG fuels in country and metropolitan areas. 

It will also look at the effects on families, businesses and industry.

Member for Lowan Emma Kealy said many people in the region felt cheated they had to pay some of the highest fuel prices in the state.

On Thursday, RACV data showed the lowest unleaded fuel price in the state was 101.9 cents a litre, while the highest was 139.9.

Unleaded fuel prices were not below 122 cents a litre anywhere in the Wimmera, with fuel retailing for between 127 cents and 132 cents a litre at many outlets.

“Many people have raised concerns with me about high fuel prices and the perceived difference between county and city areas,” Ms Kealy said.

“For many regional Victorians, getting on a tram or a bus just isn’t an option and privately owned vehicles are their only means of getting from A to B.

“Unlike other investigations into petrol prices, the spotlight will be on regional Victoria and what can be done to relieve the pressure high fuel prices are adding to the cost-of-living.

“I strongly encourage everyone in the Lowan electorate to take this opportunity to have your say.”
