Horsham Saint Maggie Caris and Edenhope-Apsley’s Lavinia Fox earned selection in the 15-and-under side.
This is Caris’ second consecutive year playing at that level while it is Fox’s first appearance.
Caris said the process to make the team, including four try-outs across two months in Melbourne, was a good experience.
“It was really good. The try-outs were good,” she said.
“Lavinia and I did it together, so it was good to get through with her.
“Lavinia and I played basketball together. The first time we met was at the under-12 try-outs a few years ago and we’ve been really good mates since.
“It’s good to get another regional girl in.”
The duo will play in the School Sport Australia Pacific School Games in Adelaide from December 2 to 10.
“It’s a bit different to last year’s (competition because) there are some international teams coming. The under-12 teams will be there, too, so it’s a bigger event from last year,” she said.
Caris said competition during the try-outs was tough.
“It was very good last year but there were a lot more girls this year. It’s been advertised a bit more and there were a lot more academy girls,” she said.
“It was pretty hard but it was a really good effort by everyone who got in.”
Caris was a bottom-age player in 2016, but this year she is a top-age player – and she said she took a different perspective.
“It’s good to see a lot of potential from all of the girls and seeing everyone getting better every year. Everyone has to lift their standards and improve,” she said.
Caris was named as goal shooter but said she would play wherever required.
“I don’t really mind. Wherever they chuck me, I’m fine,” she said. “I’m really excited. I can’t wait. It’s an exciting process so hopefully it all goes well.”
Caris has played as goal shooter for the Wimmera league’s Horsham Saints in A Grade and said it was exciting being among the top five teams as the finals series looms.
